“Taking the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to heaven and said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And He divided the two fish among them all. And they all ate and were satisfied.” (Mark 6:41-42)

When Jesus was preaching, large crowds gathered to hear His words and see His miracles. One time, when Jesus was preaching in a desolate place and it was getting late, the people had nothing to eat. This was a real problem, especially since there were not just a handful of listeners to feed, but about 5,000 men! Jesus’ disciples considered it completely impossible to provide bread for this crowd, as Jesus asked them to do. But for Jesus, nothing is impossible. He asked for the little food that was available (five loaves of bread and two fish), blessed it and shared it with all the people present. “And they all ate and were satisfied”, Mark records. That was the most miraculous meal they had ever had!

Jesus provided for the crowds since He had compassion on them and since He wanted to show them His supernatural power. But He also made clear that bread alone would not save them. They needed “the true bread from heaven”, Jesus Himself. In John 6:35, He says; “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to Me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in Me shall never thirst.”
