Generosity: Offering Hope in Dark TimesSample

Generosity: Offering Hope in Dark Times

DAY 2 OF 7

You are enriched as you give.

I grew up in the Canadian prairies where grain farming is one of the main ways to make a living. Each fall, you could see miles of golden grain fields waiting to be harvested. But those fields only produced a crop because in April and early May, seeding took place.

The Bible talks a lot about seeding (or sowing) and harvest (or reaping). Paul talks about it in relation to giving. He says, “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.” (2 Corinthians 9:6, NIV)

We were created to give. Giving is one of the highest expressions of our humanity as well as our dependence on each other. We received from others, so we give. It lifts us from a focus on our own needs to the needs of others.

In giving, we not only express our concern; we are enriched. That’s because there is a blessing that comes through giving—materially, emotionally, relationally, and spiritually. And the blessing (the harvest) is always greater than the gift.

As Paul goes on to say, “Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.” (2 Corinthians 9:10-11, NIV)

Giving has the power to move you from the ordinary to the extraordinary. It’s a quality that can draw others to Jesus inside of you!

I’m praying that as we focus on generosity this week, you will not only learn and practice being generous but that it will become a quality of your life that enriches you and everyone your life touches. :-)

You’re a miracle!
