DAY 39 OF 42

Waiting and not sleeping

In Jesus' time, a wedding actually often began shortly before midnight. The exact date, however, remained unknown to the bride for a long time and usually also to the groom. The father of the groom determined when everything was ready. Only then could the wedding actually take place.

Then the groom set out in the evening or at night to pick up his bride. A joyful procession with friends and family, accompanied by music, cheers, and lights surprised the bride and brought her to the groom's house where the party finally began. Fun Fact: back then, unlike today, it was often the bride and not the groom who had to wait.

This is exactly how Jesus describes a homecoming in this parable. Of course, it wasn't the bride who missed this joyous moment but five of the bridesmaids, through poor preparation and naivety, who slept through the entire wedding feast.

Waiting for Jesus’ return is something joyful and serious at the same time. After all, like the bride's friends, we don't want to get off on the wrong foot and miss the party. Just as the bride was feverishly anticipating her big day, making herself beautiful, and saving her whole being for her groom, we too should keep our hearts and lifestyle all focused on Jesus and not fall asleep.

ACTION STEP

In the past few days, you have confessed your sins, laid aside your guilt, and started to establish new life patterns. You have gained new freedom and at the same time you have realized that your life for Jesus is fiercely fought over. Where are good or new habits in your life threatening to fall asleep again? Today, consciously renew the victories you have recently won before God. Once again consciously proclaim over yourself, "God has forgiven me of...! I am freed from...! I am loved, blessed, ...!" Talk about it with a person close to you.
