Becoming Like Jesus: Silence and SolitudeSample
Gentle and Humble in Heart
Pray…
Lord Jesus, I need you. I need your grace, your mercy, and your love. I want to trust you more than I trust myself. To depend on you even when I think I’ve got it all together. Help me to rest in your presence. In Jesus name, amen.
Read…
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” - Matthew 11:28-30 NIV
Consider…
Jesus has invited all of us to find our rest in Him. There’s something about doing life side by side with Jesus that brings healing and peace to the deepest parts of us. And in the middle of this invitation, Jesus tells us something about Himself that we cannot overlook. He says, “I am gentle and humble in heart.”
When you think about Jesus, what do you think of? Does the way you think about Jesus line up with what He says about Himself? If not, why not?
Listen…
Find a comfortable place where you won’t be distracted. Maybe a cozy chair, a closet, or even sitting outside on a porch.
Set a timer for 5-10 minutes.
Settle into God’s presence by taking a few deep breaths and praying this prayer.
As you breathe in, “Lord Jesus…” When you breathe out, “Have mercy on me.”
Breathe in, “Heavenly Father…” Breathe out, “You’re all that I need.”
In, “Holy Spirit…” and out, “Breathe on me.”
Repeat this prayer until your mind is clear and your body is still. When you’re ready, ask God to speak to you.
When you get distracted, repeat the prayer above to help you bring your attention back to God.
When the timer ends, thank God for the time you spent together and head into the rest of your day with a clearer sense of His presence.
