Exodus: A Group StudySample

What is this passage saying?
Yahweh gives laws concerning how the Israelites should treat each other in the covenant community.
What is this passage teaching?
Although the law is often characterized as backward by modern readers, the law was a gracious demonstration of Yahweh’s care for His people. The law centered on the most vulnerable groups of people: slaves, women, sojourners, widows, orphans, and the poor. The heart of God towards justice is evident in who He specifically chooses to protect in the law.
How do I respond?
The prophet Micah declares, “What does Yahweh require of you but to do justice, to love loyal love, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8). Loving God and loving people means demonstrating God’s heart towards those who are most vulnerable in society. How are you actively serving those who are most vulnerable in your community? What would it look like to show and share the gospel to those who are marginalized or oppressed? Pray for opportunities to not only alleviate need but to walk with the vulnerable in consistent ways.
