Exodus: A Group StudySample

What is this passage saying?
The Israelites complain to Moses that there is no water. Moses’ arms are supported by Aaron and Hur as they gain victory over Amalek.
What is this passage teaching?
Aaron and Hur holding the arms of Moses is a familiar scene in Exodus. It was evident the Israelites lacked the training or equipment to take on Amalek on their own – they needed supernatural power and protection to defeat their enemy. There was no magic in Moses’ raised staff, rather it was symbolic of his faith in Yahweh’s power to prevail in battle. Aaron and Hur’s support shows that all leaders need help and accountability in their lives. Neither Aaron nor Hur could have held the staff themselves, but they could support Moses in his obedience to Yahweh.
How do I respond?
No matter how competent, righteous, or faithful – every Christ-follower needs people who support them as they fulfill the calling God has placed on their lives. Few are called to monumental tasks like Moses who lead millions of people through the barren wilderness. However, all are called to be faithful in their homes, their church, and their context. Regardless of the “size” of calling – Christ-followers need others to live out their callings. Who in your life, like Aaron and Hur, helps spur you on to fulfill the calling God has placed on your life? When you are weak and weary, who is supporting you in prayer and encouragement? If you are not connected to a Christ-following community, consider joining a small or serving in a ministry at your church. You were never meant to follow Jesus alone!
