Exodus: A Group Study

DAY 4 OF 77

What is this passage saying?

The first section of Exodus sets the scene for the story that will unfold. After coming to Egypt during the famine, Jacob and his descendants settled in the land. As the generations pass, they multiply, grow strong, and fill the land of Egypt.

What is this passage teaching?

Genesis ended with Joseph dying, trusting God to fulfill the covenant promises he made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Moses immediately opens the book of Exodus by highlighting the fulfillment of God’s promises for His people through the multiplication of their offspring. God promised Abraham to make him exceedingly fruitful (Genesis 17:2) and multiply him greatly (Genesis 17:6). As the story moves from Joseph to the generations that came after him, Moses emphasizes that God’s promises began to come true. The people of Israel “were fruitful…they multiplied…and the land was filled with them” (Exodus 1:7). All these phrases draw the reader back to God’s promises in Genesis, reminding them of His faithfulness to fulfill His promises.

How do I respond?

If Genesis demonstrates that God is a promise-making God, then Exodus begins with the reality that God is also a promise-keeping God. Out of the 12 sons of Jacob, God begins to weave His story of redemption. As generation after generation multiplies, each new son or daughter is a testament to the faithfulness of God to His people. What are some seasons in your life in which God has shown Himself faithful? Write down specific times God has delivered, encouraged, or convicted you. Praise God for his faithfulness towards you today!
