The Temple: A Study in 2 ChroniclesSample

What does it say?
Solomon knelt down before the altar, lifted his hands toward Heaven, and prayed a prayer on behalf of the people of Israel regarding the effectiveness of their worship.
What does it mean?
According to The Dake Annotated Reference Bible, there are 222 explicit prayers in the Old and New Testaments, not counting references to prayer in general. Solomon’s prayer is truly one of the most beautiful, deep, awe-inspiring prayers in all of God’s Word. This is the apex of Solomon’s relationship with God. Imagine what it was like to see the nation’s highest leader bowing before the Lord, lifting his hands toward Heaven, and asking God to bless all who came to the temple for comfort, forgiveness, justice, fertile crops, health, and victory in battle.
How should I respond?
Solomon's prayer for Israel is a stunning picture of God's incredible graciousness towards his people. He begins with a beautiful admission - there is none like the God of Israel. He cannot be contained by the highest heavens, yet he has chosen to dwell among his people (2 Chron 6:18). He is a faithful, covenant-keeping God - showing loyal love to all those who follow him. In the nearly three millennium since Solomon's dedicatory prayer, God has not changed. When you pray, do you invoke God's never-changing character? How would your prayers changed if you believed God to be faithful to his people, loyal to his covenant, and greater than anything you could ever imagine?

About this Plan

Beginning with the reign of Solomon and the construction of the temple, 2 Chronicles opens to a period of wealth and prosperity in Israel's history. This period was short-lived, however, as sin and idolatry plagued God's people. Even as the temple is destroyed and Israel exiled, the book ends with an exiled people returning home and a ruined temple being rebuilt. Through it all, God's plans and purposes remain unabated.
