Day Two — Community
We hear that word a lot, don’t we? Community. It’s a word thrown around service events and among influencers. But what exactly is it?
The simplest version? A group of people who have things in common.
This is not just your best friend(s). Your classmates? That’s a community. Your family? That’s another one. Your church? That’s one too! Throughout your life, you’ll be a part of multiple communities — some by birth, some by choice, and others by divine coincidence.
Even Jesus had a community, and He was the Son of God! Think about it: Jesus really didn’t need the disciples around — He could get His own food and walk on water. And let’s be honest, Peter was probably a pain to deal with some days. Yet Jesus chose to keep them close.
If the Savior of the world thought community was necessary, shouldn’t we follow in His footsteps?
But Jesus didn’t just stumble into a community — He built one. In the same way, we’re meant to build community with those around us. In Paul’s first letter to the church in Thessalonica, he told them:
And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone. Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else. 1 Thessalonians 5:14-15 (NIV)
God uses other people to speak to you and guide you. Whether it’s an encouraging word, a prayer, or even calling you out and keeping you accountable — God uses those around us to help us grow and stretch. For Moses, God used his siblings. For Elisha, it was his mentor, Elijah. For Mary, it was her cousin Elizabeth. For the early church, it was Paul and the remaining disciples.
Take a moment to think about all the communities you're a part of. Who in your circle do you need to move closer to, just like Jesus picked 12 disciples to build deep relationships with? Who in your life is going to help you get closer to Jesus?
