I Have Questions: A Devotional About Race

DAY 5 OF 7

“His opinion is wrong.” That’s what I thought as I debated whether WWE was real or fake wrestling for over ten minutes with one of my friends. And, I will continue for another ten minutes if need be. I will not let this guy disrespect one of the greatest sports in the world. Did I agree that the WWE uses scripted material? Of course, but will anyone ever catch me saying that in public? No. We all have opinions we refuse to bend on. When it comes to sports, favorite meals, or favorite subjects in school, not budging on your opinion is fine. But, this can become problematic when this attitude is shown for more serious topics—especially when it comes to race.

No matter the society we live in, if we look hard enough, we will find racial tension. We can find it while at work, school, or while doing other activities. As we grow closer to God, we must grow closer to God’s people. We cannot follow God while intentionally treating parts of God’s creation like they are less than others. God does not show favoritism, and neither should we. What if God saw us based on our worst qualities? What if God judged us based on what our worst enemy said about us even if it wasn’t true? None of us would be in very good standing with God. God sees all of us equally and with grace. As a follower of God, we should follow God’s example and love people

This week, pay attention to when you may be tempted to show favoritism and make an effort to treat them fairly.
