Ekklesia

DAY 1 OF 7

What comes to your mind when you hear the word “church?” Chances are, both positive and negative feelings arise when the word is mentioned. People all have different experiences with the church. No matter what experience you’ve had in the past, have you ever thought about what the purpose of the church even is? Why was it started? Who is part of it? Jesus used the Greek word “Ekklesia,” which we translate to “church” in Matthew when he said he will build his “Ekklesia.” So, in its simplest terms, Ekklesia, or church, means a gathering or assembly. That is what the church is. It is a gathering or assembly of followers of Jesus. He established the church and is the head of it. All of us have been given the amazing opportunity to join in his Ekklesia.

Challenge: Make a list of what you think a “church” should look like. Then, take some time to pray over the list you made and ask God to grow your knowledge of what he made his Ekklesia to be.
