         <div class="label">14</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">In Iconium</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="ACT.14.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">At Iconium Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue. There they spoke so effectively that a great number of Jews and Greeks believed. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="ACT.14.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers. </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="ACT.14.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders. </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="ACT.14.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles. </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="ACT.14.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">There was a plot afoot among both Gentiles and Jews, together with their leaders, to mistreat them and stone them. </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="ACT.14.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">But they found out about it and fled to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding country, </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="ACT.14.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">where they continued to preach the gospel.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">In Lystra and Derbe</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="ACT.14.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="ACT.14.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">In Lystra there sat a man who was lame. He had been that way from birth and had never walked. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="ACT.14.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="ACT.14.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">and called out, &#8220;Stand up on your feet!&#8221; At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="ACT.14.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ACT.14.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, &#8220;The gods have come down to us in human form!&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ACT.14.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="ACT.14.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="ACT.14.13"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="ACT.14.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting: </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="ACT.14.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">&#8220;Friends, why are you doing this? We too are only human, like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ACT.14.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">In the past, he let all nations go their own way. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ACT.14.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="ACT.14.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="ACT.14.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="ACT.14.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">Then some Jews came from Antioch and Iconium and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.14.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">But after the disciples had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The Return to Antioch in Syria</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.14.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="ACT.14.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">They preached the gospel in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="ACT.14.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. &#8220;We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,&#8221; they said. </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="ACT.14.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">Paul and Barnabas appointed elders</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">14:23 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">Barnabas ordained elders</span><span class="ft">; or </span><span class="fqa">Barnabas had elders elected</span></span></span><span class="content"> for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust. </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="ACT.14.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">After going through Pisidia, they came into Pamphylia, </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="ACT.14.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">and when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="ACT.14.25"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="ACT.14.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">From Attalia they sailed back to Antioch, where they had been committed to the grace of God for the work they had now completed. </span></span><span class="verse v27" data-usfm="ACT.14.27"><span class="label">27</span><span class="content">On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles. </span></span><span class="verse v28" data-usfm="ACT.14.28"><span class="label">28</span><span class="content">And they stayed there a long time with the disciples.</span></span></div>

         <div class="label">1</div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="heading">Lord</span></span><span class="heading">&#8217;s Judgment on Ahaziah</span></div><div class="p"><span class="content">  </span><span class="verse v1" data-usfm="2KI.1.1"><span class="label">1</span><span class="content">After Ahab&#8217;s death, Moab rebelled against Israel. </span></span><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="2KI.1.2"><span class="label">2</span><span class="content">Now Ahaziah had fallen through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria and injured himself. So he sent messengers, saying to them, &#8220;Go and consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, to see if I will recover from this injury.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v2" data-usfm="2KI.1.2"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v3" data-usfm="2KI.1.3"><span class="label">3</span><span class="content">But the angel of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said to Elijah the Tishbite, &#8220;Go up and meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them, &#8216;Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going off to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?&#8217; </span></span><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="2KI.1.4"><span class="label">4</span><span class="content">Therefore this is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> says: &#8216;You will not leave the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!&#8217;&#8198;&#8221; So Elijah went.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v4" data-usfm="2KI.1.4"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="2KI.1.5"><span class="label">5</span><span class="content">When the messengers returned to the king, he asked them, &#8220;Why have you come back?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v5" data-usfm="2KI.1.5"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2KI.1.6"><span class="label">6</span><span class="content">&#8220;A man came to meet us,&#8221; they replied. &#8220;And he said to us, &#8216;Go back to the king who sent you and tell him, &#8220;This is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> says: Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending messengers to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you will not leave the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!&#8221;&#8198;&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v6" data-usfm="2KI.1.6"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2KI.1.7"><span class="label">7</span><span class="content">The king asked them, &#8220;What kind of man was it who came to meet you and told you this?&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v7" data-usfm="2KI.1.7"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="2KI.1.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">They replied, &#8220;He had a garment of hair</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">1:8 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">He was a hairy man</span></span></span><span class="content"> and had a leather belt around his waist.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="2KI.1.8"><span class="content">The king said, &#8220;That was Elijah the Tishbite.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="2KI.1.8"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="2KI.1.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Then he sent to Elijah a captain with his company of fifty men. The captain went up to Elijah, who was sitting on the top of a hill, and said to him, &#8220;Man of God, the king says, &#8216;Come down!&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="2KI.1.9"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="2KI.1.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">Elijah answered the captain, &#8220;If I am a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!&#8221; Then fire fell from heaven and consumed the captain and his men.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="2KI.1.10"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="2KI.1.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">At this the king sent to Elijah another captain with his fifty men. The captain said to him, &#8220;Man of God, this is what the king says, &#8216;Come down at once!&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="2KI.1.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="2KI.1.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">&#8220;If I am a man of God,&#8221; Elijah replied, &#8220;may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!&#8221; Then the fire of God fell from heaven and consumed him and his fifty men.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="2KI.1.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="2KI.1.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">So the king sent a third captain with his fifty men. This third captain went up and fell on his knees before Elijah. &#8220;Man of God,&#8221; he begged, &#8220;please have respect for my life and the lives of these fifty men, your servants! </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="2KI.1.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">See, fire has fallen from heaven and consumed the first two captains and all their men. But now have respect for my life!&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="2KI.1.14"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2KI.1.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">The angel of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> said to Elijah, &#8220;Go down with him; do not be afraid of him.&#8221; So Elijah got up and went down with him to the king.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="2KI.1.15"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="2KI.1.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">He told the king, &#8220;This is what the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> says: Is it because there is no God in Israel for you to consult that you have sent messengers to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron? Because you have done this, you will never leave the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2KI.1.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">So he died, according to the word of the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> that Elijah had spoken.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="2KI.1.17"><span class="content">Because Ahaziah had no son, Joram</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">1:17 </span><span class="ft">Hebrew </span><span class="fqa">Jehoram, </span><span class="ft">a variant of </span><span class="fq">Joram</span></span></span><span class="content"> succeeded him as king in the second year of Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="2KI.1.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">As for all the other events of Ahaziah&#8217;s reign, and what he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel?</span></span></div>

The heads of the horses resembled the heads of lions, and out of their mouths came fire, smoke and sulfur. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="REV.9.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">A third of mankind was killed by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur that came out of their mouths. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="REV.9.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">The power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails were like snakes, having heads with which they inflict injury.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="REV.9.19"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="REV.9.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the work of their hands; they did not stop worshiping demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood&#8212;idols that cannot see or hear or walk. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="REV.9.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic arts, their sexual immorality or their thefts.</span></span></div>
