v17" data-usfm="MAT.1.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="MAT.1.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">1:18 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">The origin of Jesus the Messiah was like this</span></span></span><span class="content">: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="MAT.1.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">1:19 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">was a righteous man and</span></span></span><span class="content"> did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="MAT.1.19"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="MAT.1.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, &#8220;Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="MAT.1.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">1:21 </span><span class="fq">Jesus </span><span class="ft">is the Greek form of </span><span class="fqa">Joshua, </span><span class="ft">which means </span><span class="fqa">the <span class="nd">Lord</span> saves.</span></span></span><span class="content"> because he will save his people from their sins.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="MAT.1.21"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="MAT.1.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="MAT.1.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">&#8220;The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel&#8221;</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">1:23 </span><span class="ft">Isaiah 7:14</span></span></span><span class="content"> (which means &#8220;God with us&#8221;).</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="MAT.1.23"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="MAT.1.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. </span></span><span And he gave him the name Jesus.</span></span></div>

This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="ACT.1.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="ACT.1.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day&#8217;s walk</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">1:12 </span><span class="ft">That is, about 5/8 mile or about 1 kilometer</span></span></span><span class="content"> from the city. </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="ACT.1.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="ACT.1.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="ACT.1.14"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="ACT.1.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="ACT.1.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">and said, &#8220;Brothers and sisters,</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">1:16 </span><span class="ft">The Greek word for </span><span class="fq">brothers and sisters </span><span class="ft">(<span class="tl">adelphoi</span>) refers here to believers, both men and women, as part of God&#8217;s family; also in 6:3; 11:29; 12:17; 16:40; 18:18, 27; 21:7, 17; 28:14, 15.</span></span></span><span class="content"> the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ACT.1.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">He was one of our number and shared in our ministry.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="ACT.1.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="ACT.1.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">(With the payment he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="ACT.1.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="ACT.1.19"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.1.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">&#8220;For,&#8221; said Peter, &#8220;it is written in the Book of Psalms:</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.1.20"><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;May his place be deserted;</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.1.20"><span class="content">let there be no one to dwell in it,&#8217;</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">1:20 </span><span class="ft">Psalm 69:25</span></span></span></span></div><div class="m"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.1.20"><span class="content">and,</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.1.20"><span class="content">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;May another take his place of leadership.&#8217;</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">1:20 </span><span class="ft">Psalm 109:8</span></span></span></span></div><div class="m"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="ACT.1.20"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="ACT.1.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="ACT.1.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">beginning from John&#8217;s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="ACT.1.22"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="ACT.1.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="ACT.1.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">Then they prayed, &#8220;Lord, you know everyone&#8217;s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="ACT.1.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.&#8221; </span></span><span class="verse v26" data-usfm="ACT.1.26"><span class="label">26</span><span class="content">Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.</span></span></div>

In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="GEN.2.9"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="GEN.2.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="GEN.2.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="GEN.2.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">(The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">2:12 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">good; pearls</span></span></span><span class="content"> and onyx are also there.) </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="GEN.2.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush.</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">2:13 </span><span class="ft">Possibly southeast Mesopotamia</span></span></span><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="GEN.2.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Ashur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="GEN.2.14"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="GEN.2.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="GEN.2.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">And the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> God commanded the man, &#8220;You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="GEN.2.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="GEN.2.17"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="GEN.2.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">The </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> God said, &#8220;It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="GEN.2.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="GEN.2.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">Now the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="GEN.2.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="GEN.2.20"><span class="content">But for Adam</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">2:20 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">the man</span></span></span><span class="content"> no suitable helper was found. </span></span><span class="verse v21" data-usfm="GEN.2.21"><span class="label">21</span><span class="content">So the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man&#8217;s ribs</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">2:21 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">took part of the man&#8217;s side</span></span></span><span class="content"> and then closed up the place with flesh. </span></span><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="GEN.2.22"><span class="label">22</span><span class="content">Then the </span><span class="nd"><span class="content">Lord</span></span><span class="content"> God made a woman from the rib</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">2:22 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">part</span></span></span><span class="content"> he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v22" data-usfm="GEN.2.22"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="GEN.2.23"><span class="label">23</span><span class="content">The man said,</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="GEN.2.23"><span class="content">&#8220;This is now bone of my bones</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="GEN.2.23"><span class="content">and flesh of my flesh;</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="GEN.2.23"><span class="content">she shall be called &#8216;woman,&#8217;</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="GEN.2.23"><span class="content">for she was taken out of man.&#8221;</span></span></div><div class="m"><span class="verse v23" data-usfm="GEN.2.23"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="GEN.2.24"><span class="label">24</span><span class="content">That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v24" data-usfm="GEN.2.24"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v25" data-usfm="GEN.2.25"><span class="label">25</span><span class="content">Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.</span></span></div>
