Leadership Revealed

DAY 6 OF 6

Deborah’s story may only be two chapters long, but it is not just her story. She shares it with a tent-dwelling woman named Jael. In comparison to other biblical narratives, little is written about Deborah and Jael. Even so, they have much to teach us about leadership. Together, they remind us that leaders need focus, allies, and courage.

1. Leaders need Focus

First, Deborah and Jael teach us that leaders need to focus on the right things and lead others in that focus. Israel was struggling in their loyalty to God. Deborah was called to help lead them back to their focus on God. Every time we hear directly from Deborah, she points people in God’s direction. In Judges 5, we find Deborah praising the tribes who obeyed God and ultimately giving God the glory. Leaders have to stay focused on God and acknowledge the glory is his.

2. Leaders need Allies

Part of Israel’s struggle was the lack of unity. Deborah stressed the importance of allies when she praised the tribes who worked together. Jael, herself, was an ally of Israel as a Kenite. Allies may not look like us or share a common background. God still used Jael’s act of resistance against the Canaanites to carry out His justice. Allies will not always look a certain way, but you will find them when you look for those who seek justice.

3. Leaders need Courage

In Judges 4, we see how Barak faltered in the face of difficulty. The battle was nearly impossible, and Barak refused to obey unless Deborah went with him. She did not hesitate to go with him even though it would be dangerous. She provided an example of fearless leadership and honor. Later, Jael displayed tremendous courage. She was intentional and clear headed as she killed a Cannanite warrior in his sleep. Given the cruelty of the Canaanites, this decision took great courage.

Deborah and Jael remind us that being a friend of God is the most important quality. With God on your side, you can be focused on Him. You can be courageous and know your strongest allies are his other friends. In the words of Deborah, “So may all your enemies perish, O Lord! But your friends will be like the sun as he rises in his might.”
