It wasn’t planned. You hadn’t arranged to go to the hillside, but you had a hunger to hear more, see more and be more, with Jesus.
He was just, well, so different and so compelling. The time flew by. And then they started, the growls, gurgles and rumbles deep down in your tummy as hunger set in and the need for food was – almost – the strongest urge ever.
It was Jesus who thought about the food for the crowds who had gathered to listen to him. Jesus met your needs, and the needs of the thousands of people surrounding you, in a way you couldn’t possibly explain, however hard you tried.
What happened? From nowhere, it seemed, fish and bread appeared. You felt guilty, not being able to eat it all. You smile as you remember that great first mouthful. All your senses were heightened as you bit into the soft bread. It was so good! But then Jesus never did anything by halves – even the leftovers were a picnic in themselves. It was one you will never forget, for all sorts of reasons. The main reason was Jesus. Of course.
Sometimes God does the impossible and it can’t be explained. We call these things ‘miracles’. Why and how is this story about a ‘miracle’?
