DAY 3 OF 5

What Worship Looks Like

By Liana Medina

“Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship."—Romans 12:1

Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is- his good, pleasing and perfect will.”Okay, friends . . . So far, we’ve learned about who we are in Christ and how His love in us should change how we interact with people and cause us to share the gospel

The next thing that we would like to share with you is what worship looks like in our day-to-day life. As I’m sure you know, a huge part of your days are spent in school (literally 1/3 of each day), so you might be thinking, How can I worship while I’m at school the whole day? The good news is that singing songs at church isn’t the only way we can worship God. In fact, worship goes way deeper than that!

The essence of worship is a heart thing. Our hearts need to be changed by God first and fully experience Him so that our worship is not in vain. Pastor John Piper once said, “True worship is a valuing or a treasuring of God above all else.” When we value God and are truly satisfied by Him, then we can worship Him with all we have. This is what the apostle Paul meant when he wrote, “Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God- this is your true and proper worship. Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:1–2).

Now, you may be asking, Okay, I get that, but how do I do that when I’m at school all day, have soccer practice, and then have homework to do later? There are a few ways in which we can worship God: singing praises to Him, spending time with Him through prayer and studying His Word, and the serving others in His name.

As Christians, we are called to represent Jesus in everything we do and say. This can be a way of worshiping Him because it’s saying, “God you have changed me and I want to do everything that I do as if I were doing it to You.” This is essentially what Colossians 3:23 (“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord”) means. When we worship Him, we’re giving Him everything we have. It’s a response of knowing what He’s done for us and realizing that He deserves everything we have to give Him. John Piper describes it like this, “It would seem to be that we get up in the morning and we get our hearts fixed on Christ. And then we enter the day seeking to express and increase that satisfaction in all that God is for us in Jesus.”

So, it sounds like worshiping God throughout the day is just a constant renewal of our minds, fixing them on Jesus and all that He has done for us and living and walking in that no matter what it is that we do in the rest of our day.
