DAY 5 OF 7

Day 5

Psalm Five

Surrounded with Favor

I often am weighed down by sin (that inner heart condition that seeks selfish desires, or control, or even attention—the very epitome of self-rule). I have turned against God instead of to Him by leaning on my own wisdom and understanding. My enemy is often within and not without—living right in my own thoughts and heart. But GOD says, "Come. Put your trust in Me." And in my coming and in my trusting, I find all the things my heart was seeking—in HIM. And I rejoice. He is ALL I need for life. He defends me (I don’t have to defend myself), He blesses me (I don’t have to seek my own blessings), and surrounds me with favor. It's worth shouting about because it's no longer about the world revolving around me; it's about being surrounded by Him! And, it's all right here in Psalm 5:11-12, “But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; Let those also who love Your name Be joyful in You. For You, O Lord, will bless the righteous; With favor You will surround him as with a shield.”

Not only does His favor surround us, but it also shields us. Let’s look at who our God is and what He does in this Psalm:

He hears my voice (verses 1-3)

He hates sin (verse 5)

He destroys lies (verse 6)

His love is steadfast (verse 7)

He leads me and makes my way straight (verse 8)

He will judge righteously (verses 9-10)

He is my refuge and protection (verse 11)

He blesses the righteous (verse 12)

He surrounds/covers me like a shield (verse 12)

We have much reason to join the Psalmist, David, as he urges us to sing, shout, and rejoice!

To Do With The Kids:

Read Psalm 5 together. Then read each statement about God above and have the children take turns finding where it is in the Psalm. Use verses 11 and 12 as copy work, making sure to use their best writing, spelling, and correct punctuation. Try writing their best copy on parchment paper.
