Psalm Three

Cry Out to Him . . . Rest . . . Be Courageous

As a homeschool teacher, I am sure you have felt like David in this Psalm. Such a lamenting of the soul! Tears and more tears. Those days when it feels like everything is against you, you may want to crawl in a hole and disappear. David is writing this Psalm as he is actually running from his own son who has risen up against him. Do you have family members that you feel are rising against you? Do you always feel like you have to defend yourself and your choices? Let the Lord be your defender and shield. Let Him lift up your head and see His face and His glory. The Psalmist tells us what else we can do when we are feeling low: 

Cry out to God: “I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill.”

Rest: “I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me.”

Be Courageous: “I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about.”

We have a God Who is for us, and our salvation belongs to Him. We have reason to be courageous as we have the One Who created all things, including us, as our shield and salvation. We can lay down our sorrows and fears and truly rest in Him. He hears us, He saves us, and He shields us. 

To Do With the Kids:

Ask if they have ever had siblings or friends turn against them. As you read this Psalm together, show them that God is for them. Have they heard someone say that God is not real? God says he hears us. Only something living and real can hear, whereas, non-living things have no hearing. Study the human ear and God’s perfect design. Draw and label the human ear and all its parts. Option: study ancient shields, write about their use, and make a labeled drawing. Write, “Psalm 3” in the middle of your shield.
