The Highlights Series Part 2 by John Luke Robertson

DAY 36 OF 39

Paul wrote the book of Ephesians. On both of his missionary journeys, Paul visited Ephesus. During his time there he converted many, but many others opposed him, especially a silversmith named Demetrius who made implements for worshipping idols. That conflict eventually led to a riot which resulted in Paul having to leave the city, but Paul had done a lot to grow the church there before leaving and left many who loved and respected him.

The letter to the Ephesians was written sometime in AD 60-61. Paul was in prison in Rome at the time. Once again, time on his hands, but God directed his writing.

Ephesians is one of Paul’s most formal letters. It deals with topics at the core of what it means to be a Christian, both in faith and practice. Paul divides the letter into two segments. The first segment is about the truth of the gospel and the second is about the action and lifestyle that accompanies knowing that gospel truth. Paul isn’t necessarily addressing a specific problem, but he wanted to encourage the believers to keep maturing in their faith as a way of avoiding problems in the future. He makes it known that all people—Jews and Gentiles—are dead because of their sin, but have been made alive because of Jesus Christ.

Paul makes it clear that he expects this community to walk in accordance with its heavenly calling—to live a life worthy of what has been done for them which is Jesus’ death on the cross.

For all of us, it’s easy to get complacent and not live up to our heavenly calling. Reading Ephesians should help us stand strong in our beliefs and keep the desire to prove ourselves worthy of Jesus’ sacrifice for us. It also helps us reach out into our communities with love and unity.
