DAY 42 OF 50

Doubling Down on What Works

He lops off every branch that doesn't produce. And he prunes those branches that bear fruit for even larger crops. John 15:2 TLB

One of the keys to improving productivity is the ability to identify and differentiate the activities that produce results from those that do not. The goal is to then de-clutter by eliminating that which does not work and enhancing that which does work.

De-cluttering does two very important things - it takes away scarce resources (time, personnel, money) from non-productive activities, and redeploys them to boost the resources available to the actual activities that crank out the results, thereby improving output from those activities.

This is the principle otherwise expressed as, “strip off and throw aside every encumbrance (unnecessary weight) ...” (Hebrews 12:1 AMPC)

For business organizations, one of the less obvious limitations on performance is 'tradition'. Many businesses have activities they have always done but have ceased evaluating for relevance. It is easy to continue in a practice because “you have always done it that way” and not realize that it is holding back the company.

The power of tradition is evident in the fact that Jesus rebuked the Pharisees saying, “Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.” (Mark 7:9 KJV) It is well within the realm of possibility that God may be urging us in a direction that we refuse to go because we are stuck on the familiar path.

The key to avoiding this rut is to be open and regularly re-evaluate our assumptions and practices to check for alignment with God's Word and with the vision He has set for the business.

Remember, it is entirely possible for the business to be 'doing great' but for you to be getting no closer to becoming like Christ. If that is the case, you are not yet bearing the right kind of fruit.
