Timeline of Key Moments in the History of the Bible


Dates in antiquity approximate



  • 1450–400 BC | Writing of the OT.

  • 30 AD | Crucifixion and Resurrection

  • 70 AD | Temple Destroyed

  • 50–90 AD | Writing of the NT.

  • 95 AD | Jewish historian Josephus identified the OT canon. Some scholars believe Ezra collected them as early as the 5th century BC.

  • 312 AD | Constantine

  • 397 AD | Council of Carthage established the NT canon.

  • 400 AD | The Bible was translated into Latin by St. Jerome (the Vulgate).

  • 1380 AD | John Wycliffe began English translation.

  • 1456 AD | Gutenberg Bible was printed.

  • 1525–1530 AD | William Tyndale, a Reformation scholar, translated the NT and Pentateuch into English.

  • 1548 AD | The Council of Trent voted to accept the 12 books of the Apocrypha as part of the canon. The Reformation movement rejected this decision.

  • 1611 AD | King James I commissioned an English translation.

  • 1881–1884 AD | The Revised Version of the Bible was written by American and English scholars. They used manuscripts that were not available during the King James translation.

  • 1947 AD | Discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

  • 1978 AD | The New International Version of the Bible was completed.
