He Has Been Waiting for You

I was drenched with sweat. It had been days since I’d slept on a mattress. My hair stank of wood smoke and volcanic ash dusted my skin. I’d left home to visit villages without access to a church. Villages accessible only by muddy trails up mountains and into deep valleys.

Now I was heading home. I hoped to reach my truck by mid-day and home by evening. There, I’d enjoy a hot meal, a bath and see my family. Shortly after lunch, I recognized the well-traveled trail to the main road. To my left a small trail squirmed up the mountain before disappearing into the jungle. I headed down, headed home.

Then I heard the Spirit whisper, “One more hill.” I stopped, looked at the small trail. In spite longing to be clean, sleep on my bed and see my family, I started up the mountain.

One more hill turned into hours of intense climbing. Finally, I broke through the jungle and entered a small village. Someone shouted: “They’re here!” 

A man approached, “He has been waiting for you.” He said. Then walked away, indicating I should follow.

We entered a small hut. When my eyes adjusted, I saw staring white eyes. Seated on a mat was an elder with hair and beard as white as his eyes. Protruding from one of his shins, I could see a smooth, polished bone. He had been blind and lame for a long time.

He told me God spoke to him in a dream, “A man who belongs to me will visit you tomorrow.” When I entered the village, he knew I was the man. 

When he was young, he had fallen off a cliff and cried out to God. Since God saved him, he promised to give God land for building a church. “I want you to build a church,” he said. “I want my village to know God!” 

I was overwhelmed by God’s awesomeness. He had gone before us! 

Go Before!

Today, as you go about your tasks, listen for the still, small voice of the Holy Spirit. Don’t question or try to rationalize it away. Follow his leading! He is going before you, preparing the way.
