Is Jesus Who He Says He Is?

The disciples anticipated a kingdom ruled by Jesus. Then everything fell apart. Jesus was crucified, burying their hopes. Imagine the fear, grief, and confusion. Jesus promised so much. Was it all a lie? Was Jesus who he’d said he was?

Then they hear the impossible. Jesus is risen. Could it be? Could John trust again? John, excited ran ahead of Peter. But hesitated.

“Stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in” (John 20:4 ESV). 

Why? Fear of disappointment? If Jesus was still in the grave, how could he be all he claimed? 

After disappointing attempts to begin our family we learned of medical complications preventing pregnancy. One night while praying, I felt God’s healing. Six weeks later, I stared dumbfounded at a positive pregnancy test. Shortly after, I traveled to Indonesia. Fear, excitement, anticipation, and joy flooded me.

A few days later, I felt unwell. Worrisome symptoms followed. I realized I was miscarrying. Bitterly I prayed. There in a tiny hotel room, alone, on the far of the world, my miracle slowly slipped away.

I was angry, confused, and depressed. God healed me, how could this happen? Could I trust again? Is Jesus who he says he is?

I relate to John at the tomb’s entrance. I’d experienced the miracle, but it wasn’t supposed to end this way. Like John, I’d seen signs of resurrection power, but I couldn’t find the strength to step in. I hesitated. 

As John hesitated, Peter rushed past him into the tomb. John followed, saw and believed. God calls you to go in, to see his promises are true, to believe. What fears hold you back? 

Moving past my hesitation required facing the fear I might not get pregnant again. Yet, today, we’re headed to the Indonesia as a family of three. 

Step in, you will find Jesus is who he says he is.

Be honest with God about your questions, hurts, and disappointments. Ask him to give you courage to enter in to his presence and an empowering revelation of his glory. Then do what he tells you to do!
