Gone Before

While itinerating, I showed pictures of where we would serve. I noticed tears streaming down the face of an Asian grandfather. 

After service he explained they were of his village. Weeping, he told me, “Today my prayers are answered, because you are going!” 

As I left the Father whispered two truths to my spirit: 

1. I will never send you where I haven’t gone before you.

As the angel said to Mary:

“Go, tell his disciples and Peter. ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee.’” Mark 16:7 NIV

I’ll be honest: We were anxious. We were taking our son into a Third World, Communist country. We didn’t know the language, we’d never been there, and we only knew two people in country. 

Were there unknowns at every turn? Absolutely! Could we see Jesus ahead of us? No, we couldn’t. We first had to step out of safety and into the unknown. We had to trust him, “There you will see him, just as he told you” (Mark 16:7). 

When we arrived in our new home, could we see that Jesus was already there? Absolutely! Did we find everything we needed? Yes, because Jesus was there. Did we have electricity and water every day? Well no…but Jesus was there. Did we almost lose our minds learning a new language? Definitely! And Jesus was there.

Did God provide relationships with neighbors, friends, and ministry partners? Yes! Did we see people come to know Christ? A resounding yes! Because Jesus was there. Have all the difficulties been worth it? Absolutely! Because Jesus is here.

2. Through prayer you join Christ in going before.

Gabriel told Daniel (9:23 NIV), “As soon as you began to pray, a word went out.” As soon as that grandfather started praying, heaven responded. Our prayers for never-reached people matter.

Today, we see the fruit of a grandfather’s prayers. Are you willing to join Jesus in “going before” by interceding for the never-reached?

Spend time in prayer every day this week, asking God to give you a burden for never reached people and allowing the Holy Spirit to pray through you for specific needs.
