Breaking Chains

DAY 1 OF 3

What are my chains?

This devotion is based around a crazy story in the Bible of a man who lived in a cemetery that was constantly tormented by things on the inside and people on the outside.

As you read the story (in a moment) you will notice this man was filled with lots of demons. It’s easy to think, “what does this have to do with me?” But whether by few or by many, most of us are fighting some kind of demon. It could be regrets in the past or fears about the future. It could be simply confusion about today.

What struck me in the story is that it was other people who were trying to put chains on this man, to keep him in this place of death (a cemetery). He would often break those chains but still be tormented by what was inside of him.

Have you discovered yet that not everybody is wanting you to be free? Some people get jealous at your freedom. Some are threatened or intimidated by you living in a wholehearted way.

But there are always Jesus loving people (and Jesus Himself) who are willing to help you find your freedom. There are people who are not afraid of your brokenness or the journey you are on. These are the people who can help you find freedom. Maybe you are one these people to help others find freedom?

Considerations:

  1. What are my chains? Could it be things like guilt, shame, fear, regret etc?

  2.  Who am I in this story I am about to read? (The main in chains, people trying to chain him, or somebody like Jesus trying to help?)
