DAY 327 OF 366

Overcoming through Patience

Reading: Hebrews 6:9-15

Key Verse: “We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised” verse 12

As Christians we tend to hear many talks on faith but very few on patience. Today’s society places great emphasis on gratification which is instant whether it is coffee, messaging or take away food. Yet Scripture reveals that patience is vital if we are to see God move to overcome the issues that confront us. Yesterday’s marathon runner endures for hours whilst a woman takes nine months to from conception to birth. Abraham waited twenty five years for the fulfilment of God’s promise given when he was seventy five and finally received when he was one hundred with the birth of Isaac (Gen.12:4, 21:5). Similarly, Joseph waited twenty two years between his dream and its fulfilment in Egypt.

Sometimes God moves astoundingly quickly. Isaiah 65:24 says, “Before they call I will answer”; but contrast with Hebrews 10:36, “You need to keep on patiently doing God’s will if you want him to do for you all that he has promised” (TLB). It is said that Edison patiently tried a thousand experiments before finally inventing the electric light bulb.

When the Israelites become impatient waiting for Moses to return, they turned to worship false gods (Exod.32:1). Let us overcome the desire for instant gratification through patience.

Prayer: Lord give me wisdom to understand when I should press forward and when I should wait patiently for You
