DAY 5 OF 7

Letting Go of the Past

What do you do when pain is etched deep within your soul? What do we do when we’ve allowed the secrets of our lives  to grow into lies telling us who we are not and what we can never become?

The truth is, all of us have a past, but that past does not have to define us. Failure is not final. Pain is not permanent—unless we choose to believe the lies. In Christ, no one is a failure. In Christ, no one is a loser. In Christ, no one is a mistake. So it’s time to begin anew.

For if you keep carrying around the same bricks from your past, you’ll end building the same house in which you will live in the future. The past is the past. And there’s a reason it’s called that. Our God is a God of fresh starts, new beginnings and second chances. The Bible says that “we know that God causes everything to work together for the good” (Romans 8:28). So turn the page, let Him show you what He can and wants to do with your life.

While you may feel overwhelmed at times, paralyzed by a painful memory, holding on to a form of shame and guilt, God is not. The truth is He’s not interested in your past—but He is most definitely fully invested in your future.

So today don’t let anybody remind you of who you were. Don’t allow your past to bring you down. God wants you to move forward. He doesn’t want you to dwell there. For you are His special treasure and in His eyes you are significant. You have endless, eternal value. Roy E. Cogdill once stated, “An individual can no more remember all the blunders and mistakes he has made, than he can count all the blessings he has received.”

So despite all of your failures, mistakes, or whatever you think that’s happened to you in life, you’re a child of the King. It’s time to start enjoying the gift that God made available to you in Christ. If God can let go of your past, don’t you think you should do the same?
