The Devotional to End All DevotionalsSample

The Devotional to End All Devotionals

DAY 2 OF 40

Bible study is more than reading. We read the Bible to expose ourselves to truth and get familiar with it. We study the Bible to take truth in, absorb it, and draw strength from it.

The Bible says that God’s Word is food to Christians. A person without nourishment grows weak, confused, vulnerable, and prone to wander; a Christian who doesn’t study God’s Word does the same.

Sadly, many Christians are content to have only one or two meals a week (Sundays and Wednesdays) and to eat those meals from someone else’s hand (in the form of a lesson or sermon) like a toddler who can’t handle a spoon yet. No wonder they struggle!

To make sure this never happens to you, we’re going to teach you three different Bible study methods that can serve as your utensils during your personal Bible study.

Ready? Let’s begin.

The God Follower method of Bible study is made up of two simple, but powerful questions:

  1. What does this passage tell me about God?

  2. What does this passage tell me about being a follower of God?

Read the first of today’s verses and ask the above questions. Write your answers down. (You’ll find it easier to complete the rest of this study if you keep a notebook to write down your answers every day.) After you’ve answered the above questions, compare your answers to the sample answers below.

Suggested answers:

1. This passage tells me every word that God speaks is important, and that God is the source of what I need to live.

2. This passage tells me that, as a follower of God, I should consider God’s word to be at least as important as food and depend on God’s word for guidance and life.

How’d you do?

Your answers may have been worded differently, and you may have gotten a bit more or less information out of this passage. That’s fine! It’s more important that you concentrate on God’s Word and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you than it is for your answers to match someone else’s exactly. Just be sure never to read anything into a verse that isn’t there or dismiss something just because it’s uncomfortable for you to think about.

Try the God Follower method on the second of today’s verses on your own.

Thank God for His Word, the Bible.
