The Heart of a HeroSample

The Heart of a Hero

DAY 9 OF 9

Confidence

So many people struggle because they don’t have confidence that flows from within.

Consider how much energy and effort we exert to achieve enviable heights or to hide personal lows when we believe that we are the sole author of our success and that our worthiness is dependent upon external instead of eternal measures. No wonder so many people feel alone in life! But the truth is the perfect hero is never the one with a perfect life—that doesn’t exist.

When we shift our focus to our ability and willingness to help others, we are no longer isolated by our imperfections, self-doubt, or inflated egos. When we know our worth and value are already solid, the stress of vying for validation leaves us, and we are free to move forward in purpose and with confidence.

True leadership, heroism, and enduring legacies are built upon serving others, giving back, establishing community, and uplifting the discouraged. The moment we are community and not consumer-oriented, we are no longer separated from others. The measures that we once allowed to divide us from others no longer have power.

Confidence stretches wide when we realize that we are not in this life alone, that we are born with value and promise, and that the world needs us.

We celebrate the notion of a superhero, but in moments of real need we welcome the help of anyone willing to give aid just as anyone would l be glad for our help. But a funny thing happens on the way to becoming a hero. We run smack into our flaws.

When this happens, instead of rushing forth to be a hero, we step back from stepping in because we equate imperfections with a lack of worth, a lack of influence, a lack of power. Surprisingly, our imperfections are a part of our heroic power.

Our willingness to be open about our flaws and deep wounds grows our potential to inspire others to live authentically. We find freedom when we no longer feel obligated to be the perfect one with all the answers in the board room, at the family dinner table, or in the church pew.

Heroic confidence multiplies when our efforts are no longer made to fill our lives, but to fill another’s life. This singular focus frees us to love with open, genuine affection and an honesty that is challenging and infectious.
