Living Changed: Identity

DAY 7 OF 9

We Are

We often define ourselves by what our eyes have seen or our minds can fathom. But God has a completely different way of defining who we are. He defines us by how He created us. Who we are can only be found in Him.

He tells us we are more than our mistakes. We tend to define our lives by our mistakes, but that’s not how God thinks of us. We were created by a Savior that “forgives wickedness and will remember sins no more” (Hebrews 8:12). When we come to him with a broken heart of confession, He erases our sins. His forgiveness doesn’t give permission to sin, but it does allow us freedom from it. We are only to be defined by God, and He says we are “a brand new creation, the old has passed away; the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

He tells us we are fearfully and wonderfully made. God created your inmost being and knit you together in your mother’s womb (Psalms 139:13). He doesn’t ponder His creation. He knew we were wonderful the moment He created us. He never questioned it. We are His handiwork, and we should praise Him for His amazing creation.

He tells us we are His. God not only sees our rejection and pain, but He walks beside us as we go through it. Even when people reject us, we don’t have to reject ourselves. God says, “I have adopted you. You are no longer orphans. You belong to me” (John 14:18). With things like jealousy, comparison, and anger alive in the world, we will never be completely accepted by people, but we are always accepted in Christ. God not only accepts our uniqueness, He has a place for it.

God says, “ask and you shall receive.” Ask Him to show you your true identity. Ask and you will receive all that God has for you. You will be changed.

As you think about your true identity, what is the God-given quality that is most difficult for you to accept?
