What is both dangerous and comforting at the same time? If you guessed the Bible you’re right. The Bible is God’s story of His interaction with His creation. There is nothing more comforting than the fact that God loves us, relentlessly pursues us, and desires to be in relationship with us. It is also dangerous because when we let our lives be wrapped up in the story God wants to continue to tell through His people, we will never find ourselves in our comfort zone.
The two books of the Bible that capture this reality well are Luke and Acts. These two books form a two-volume work written by a Jesus follower named Luke. Luke was an early convert to Christianity. He was a coworker with Paul on his missionary journeys and was a doctor by trade.
Luke dedicates his Gospel and the book of Acts to a gentleman named Theophilus. His name literally means “one who loves God,” and he probably was the one who funded the writing of the book, which was a very expensive thing to do. This book was dedicated to Theophilus, but it was meant to be spread throughout the early church for the communities to learn more about Jesus.
Luke is very clear at the beginning of his Gospel on how he gathered his information and why he is writing. He says that he gathered his information from the best eyewitness testimonies and the most reliable writings of the day. It is remarkable how accurate and historically credible Luke is throughout all his writings. Luke doesn’t just want to write a historical account, though. He wants to show how Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Testament expectations from God’s covenant with His people. He will also expand in the book of Acts to show how Jesus and the church is the culmination of the story of how God interacts with the whole world.
In the Gospel, Luke focuses on Jesus making it to Jerusalem where he will die on the cross, be buried in a tomb for three days and rise back to life on the third day. The culmination of these events proves to launch a revolution that continues into Luke’s second volume called Acts.
Luke shares a comforting message of God with us, but also a dangerous message of revolution. As you read through, think about what mission God might have for you. Who does He have for you to love?
