Momentum: How To Ignite Your Faith

DAY 6 OF 25

FATHER KNOWS BEST When I was a kid I loved to go to the state fair. One of my favorite attractions was a fun house. It had moving floors, zigzagging stairs, shifting walls, optical illusions, and an assortment of mirrors. But these were no ordinary mirrors. These mirrors had the ability to totally distort your shape and appearance. For many Christians, their view of God comes from a kind of spiritual fun house mirror. It is distorted and inaccurate. They view God as a cosmic drill sergeant who is mean- spirited and rules-focused. The apostle Paul paints a very different picture of God in Romans 12:2. He says God’s will is good, pleasing, and perfect. His plans for me are in my best interest. Doing life His way is actually pleasant, satisfying, and enjoyable. His will is perfect; it will never lead me down the wrong path. The Christian life is not so much what God wants from me as what God wants for me. Like any good father, he wants the very best for his children. And—as contrary as it may seem—our best includes living separate from the world’s values. In Romans 12:2 Paul tells us the path to getting God’s very best: “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Sadly, most Christians don’t experience God’s very best. Many Christians get conned and seduced into believing the lies of the world and miss out on God’s best. Key to getting God’s best is to live separate from the world’s values. When Paul talks about the world in Romans 12:2, he is not referring to the physical planet. He is referring to a world system that will lead you away from God. The world’s system is a set of beliefs, ideals, and values that compete with God for your love and devotion. This week, we’ll look at a teenager named Daniel who is a fitting portrait of living separate from the world’s values. WHAT ABOUT YOU? Is there any place where you have been conned into embracing the world’s values? Do an honest assessment time, desires, finances, and relationships. Today’s Takeaway Falling more in love with God helps me fall out of love with the world.
