SPIRITUAL IDENTITY THEFT The Bourne Identity is a 2002 spy film that tells the story of Jason Bourne, who is entangled in a CIA conspiracy. But there’s a twist: Jason doesn’t know where he came from or if he has any family. He suffers from retro-grade amnesia. The movie is really his attempt to discover his true identity. Like Jason, every person wants to discover their identity. We are always seeking answers to three fundamental questions in life. • Who am I? The issue of identity. • Where do I belong? The issue of security. • What am I supposed to do? The issue of significance. 1. Who am I? For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. (Romans 12:3 updated NIV) This verse is a call from God to think clearly and accurately about who we are. Because of personal baggage, deep insecurity, or past hurts, we often carry around a distorted view of who we really are. One of the best days of your life is the day you realize who you are in Christ. 2. Where do I belong? For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. (Romans 12:4–5 updated NIV) All of us need to belong. Even the most independent individualist longs for belonging. None of us can live the Christian life alone. We need not only the Holy Spirit, but we need other people. 3. What am I supposed to do? We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. (Romans 12:6 updated NIV) Identifying your spiritual gift will give you a primary indicator of what God wants you to do with your life. As you’ll see in this week’s devotionals, Moses was a man who struggled with his identity and how he fit into God’s plan. WHAT ABOUT YOU? Spend some today pondering these three questions: Who am I?
