CHAPTIR FYVE.
The Day oʼ the Lord comin on, we are to be ready to meet him; leadin holie lives, and denyin aʼ sin.
1But, as to the times and the occasions, brethren, ye need‐na that I write ocht to ye;
2For ye yersels weel ken that the Day oʼ the Lord sae comes as a thief iʼ the nicht.
3At siccan times as they may be sayin, “Peace and safety”; than, oʼ a suddaintie, destruction comes on them — as birth‐pangs on a bearin wumman — and in naegate may they escape.
4But ye, brethren, are‐na iʼ the mirk, that the Day soud come on ye as a thief.
5For ye are bairns oʼ light; sons oʼ the day; we are‐na oʼ the nicht, nor yet oʼ the gloom.
6Sae than, lat us no be sleepin, as div the lave, but lat us be wary, and keepin sober.
7For folk that sleep, sleep by nicht; and folk that mak theirsels fuʼ, by nicht are fuʼ.
8But we, bein oʼ the day, lat us be eident, haein putten on the prufe‐coat oʼ faith and love; and as a helmet the hope oʼ salvation.
9For God didna gie us ower to wrath, but to come into salvation throwe oor Lord Jesus Christ.
10Wha deeʼt for us, that, gin we be waiken, or gin we be #5:10 The “sleepin” here isna the same as v. 6, 7; but raither the sleepin wiʼ the deid.sleepin, we aʼ at ance, and aʼ thegither, micht begin to leeve wiʼ him.
11And sae, be ye comfortin ane anither; eʼen as ye are doin.
12But we entreat you, brethren, to be weel‐acquant wiʼ thae wha toil amang ye, and are ower ye iʼ the Lord, and admonish ye;
13And hae muckle esteem for them for their warkʼs sake. And be ye at peace amang yersels.
14But we coonsel ye, brethren, admonish ye the disorderly; comfort thae oʼ feebleness oʼ saul; strenthen the weak; thole lang wiʼ aʼ.
15See to it that nane return ill‐doin for ill‐doin to ony; but aye pursue eftir that whilk is gude, toward ane anither, and toward aʼ men.
16Be aye rejoicin.
17Cease na to pray.
18In aʼ things gie thanks; for this is Godʼs wull in Christ Jesus toward ye.
19Quench‐na the Spirit.
20Geck‐na at preachins,
21But pit aʼ things to the test; and what is bonnie haud fast.
22Keep awa frae evil, in ony shape.
23And the God oʼ peace, mak ye perfete in holiness! And may yere hail spirit, and saul, and body, be keepit faultless at the comin oʼ oor Lord Jesus Christ!
24He is faithfuʼ wha caʼs you; wha eke wull perform.
25Brethren, be ye in prayer for us.
26Salute aʼ the brethren wiʼ a sacred kiss.
27I chairge ye by the Lord, that this letter be read to aʼ the brethren.
28The tender love oʼ oor Lord Jesus Christ be wiʼ ye.
