From Our Father to Amen: The Prayer That Shapes Us

DAY 14 OF 14

Amen

The Final Word of Faith

The Lord’s Prayer concludes with one powerful, sacred word: "Amen" (Matthew 6:13 NKJV). A word so small, yet so full of meaning. It’s more than a polite ending or a religious tradition—it is a bold declaration of faith, trust, and surrender.

When we say Amen, we’re not just closing our prayer. We’re affirming everything we’ve just prayed. We’re saying, “Yes, Lord. Let it be so.” We’re placing our confidence in God’s power, wisdom, and perfect will. It is as though we are signing our name under every truth we have spoken to our Father in heaven.

Throughout the Lord’s Prayer, we have acknowledged God’s holiness, surrendered our will, requested His provision, sought His forgiveness, and pleaded for His protection. And now, with Amen, we seal those sacred requests—not with doubt or hesitation, but with full assurance in God’s goodness.

Amen is our way of saying, “I trust You, God. I trust that Yours is the kingdom. Yours is the power. Yours is the glory—forever.” We might not know what the day ahead holds, but when we pray with Amen, we are declaring that we know the One who holds the day.

In Hebrew, Amen means “truth” or “so be it.” It is a word used throughout Scripture to confirm the reliability of God’s promises. Jesus often began His teachings with “Truly, truly” (literally “Amen, Amen”) to emphasize that His words carried divine authority.

So when we close our prayers with Amen, let’s do so reverently and intentionally. Let it be a personal proclamation of faith. A surrender of control. A confirmation that we believe God hears, cares, and acts according to His perfect plan.

Even when we don’t see immediate answers, even when we don’t understand the outcome, Amen says, “I still believe.” It is our echo of trust, our “Yes, Lord,” in every season.

As we reflect on the beauty of the Lord’s Prayer and the journey it takes us through—worship, surrender, dependence, forgiveness, and spiritual protection—may Amen rise from our lips not as an ending, but as an act of worship.

Because our God is faithful. He is holy. He is sovereign. And all God’s people can say . . .

Amen.

About this Plan

From Our Father to Amen: The Prayer That Shapes Us

In Matthew chapter 6, Jesus gives us a model for prayer. This beautiful prayer, known as The Lord’s Prayer, begins with a worshipful "Our Father", reminding us of our close and loving relationship with God, and ends with "Amen" or “so be it”— a bold declaration of faith, trust, and surrender. As we reflect on the words our Lord has given us and the journey they take us through—worship, surrender, dependence, forgiveness, and spiritual protection—may “Amen” rise from our lips not as an ending, but as an act of worship.
