From Our Father to Amen: The Prayer That Shapes Us

DAY 12 OF 14

Deliver us

The Battle is Real – So is the Rescue

Life is a battlefield, and Jesus knew it. When He taught us to pray, "But deliver us from the evil one" (Matthew 6:13 NKJV), He included a plea not only for protection but for deliverance—rescue from the enemy of our souls. This prayer reminds us that we are not fighting alone.

The “evil one” is not a vague force; Scripture identifies him clearly—Satan, the adversary, the deceiver. He seeks to discourage, tempt, accuse, and devour. Jesus prayed for His followers, “I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one” (John 17:15 NKJV). We are not removed from the struggle, but we are never without protection.

To “deliver” means to be rescued at the moment of confrontation. It does not mean we’ll avoid trials altogether, but that when temptation rises, God is faithful to provide a way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13). When sin presses in or we stumble again, this petition lifts our eyes from guilt to grace. We cry out, not as orphans, but as children—asking our Father to reach into our mess and pull us out.

Sometimes we fail and feel overwhelmed with shame. But God’s Word says otherwise. If we confess, He is faithful to forgive and cleanse (1 John 1:9). He does not leave us in the pit. Like a loving parent, He lifts us, steadies us, and encourages us to keep growing—step by step.

We’re reminded in James 4 “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (James 4:7-8 NKJV). Victory doesn’t come from our strength, but from our nearness to Him. As we humble ourselves, rely on His Word, and pray for deliverance, He acts.

So today, don’t pretend you’re not tempted. Acknowledge the battle. Pray honestly: “Father, deliver me.” Then trust that He will. Our enemy is real—but our Savior is greater.

He is able to keep you from falling (Jude 24). And even when you do fall, He is always there—faithful to rescue, restore, and carry you forward.

About this Plan

From Our Father to Amen: The Prayer That Shapes Us

In Matthew chapter 6, Jesus gives us a model for prayer. This beautiful prayer, known as The Lord’s Prayer, begins with a worshipful "Our Father", reminding us of our close and loving relationship with God, and ends with "Amen" or “so be it”— a bold declaration of faith, trust, and surrender. As we reflect on the words our Lord has given us and the journey they take us through—worship, surrender, dependence, forgiveness, and spiritual protection—may “Amen” rise from our lips not as an ending, but as an act of worship.
