30 Days of Scriptures for Mental Health StrugglesSample

Day 11: Advocate for Yourself
One thing I had to learn during my mental health journey was how to advocate for myself. Without speaking up for my needs or asking for what I desired in regards to how I was feeling, as well as my treatment plans for the bipolar disorder, I would not have gotten what I needed or desired.
At first, I was kind of hesitant to speak up for myself because of the stigma of mental health and feeling like I was helpless. However, reading these two verses of Luke 11:9-10 NIV encouraged me to advocate for myself. The verses say, “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”
These scriptures are a perfect biblical reminder of the saying, “Closed mouths don’t get fed.” If you don’t speak up for yourself, then how can you get what you need or want?
Therefore, I encourage you to advocate for yourself regarding your mental health needs and wants, especially in doctor settings and in relationships (platonic, familial, or romantic). This helped me greatly to get the help I needed and to ultimately become manic and depression episode free.
Prayer point:
Heavenly Father, Almighty God, thank you for your Word, the Bible. Please bless me to advocate for myself regarding my mental health needs and desires so I can get adequate support. I pray that you bless me with the bravery to speak up when I feel helpless. May you provide me with the right psychiatrist, therapist, and community/support groups to help me overcome my mental health challenges. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
