Revelation 9

Fifth Trumpet: The Emergence of the Locusts from the Bottomless Pit

1 The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft leading to the bottomless pit.

2 When he opened the shaft, smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a gigantic furnace. The sun and the atmosphere were darkened by the smoke from the shaft.

3 Out of the smoke, locusts descended upon the earth, and they were given power like the power that scorpions of the earth possess.

4 They were instructed not to damage the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only those people who did not have God’s seal on their foreheads.

5 The locusts were not authorized to kill them but only to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the agony caused by a scorpion when it stings a person.

6 During those days people will seek death but will never find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.

7 The appearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle. On their heads they wore what appeared to be crowns resembling gold, and their faces looked like human faces.

8 Their hair was like women’s hair, and their teeth were like lions' teeth.

9 They had breastplates that looked like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots charging into battle.

10 They possessed tails with stingers like scorpions, and in their tails was their power to inflict pain on people for five months.

11 Ruling over them as king was the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek his name is Apollyon.

12 The first catastrophe has passed; two more catastrophes are still coming.

Sixth Trumpet: The Release of the Angels Bound at the Euphrates

13 The sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice emanating from the four horns of the golden altar that stands before God.

14 The voice said to the sixth angel who held the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”

15 So the four angels who had been kept ready for this precise hour, day, month, and year were released to kill one-third of humanity.

16 The number of mounted troops was two hundred million. I heard their number.

17 In my vision I saw the horses and their riders: They wore breastplates that were fiery red, dark blue, and sulfur yellow. The heads of the horses resembled lions’ heads, and from their mouths came fire, smoke, and sulfur.

18 One-third of humanity was killed by these three plagues—by the fire, the smoke, and the sulfur pouring from their mouths.

19 For the power of the horses was located in their mouths and in their tails; their tails were like serpents, equipped with heads, and with them they inflict injury.

20 The rest of humanity who were not killed by these plagues still refused to repent of the works of their hands. They did not stop worshipping demons and idols made of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood—idols that cannot see or hear or walk.

21 They did not repent of their murders, their sorcery, their sexual immorality, or their thefts.
