8
The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer
1 When He opened the seventh seal, silence fell over heaven for approximately half an hour.
2 Then I saw the seven angels who stand in God’s presence, and seven trumpets were given to them.
3 Another angel, holding a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given a large quantity of incense to offer, along with the prayers of all the saints, on the golden altar that was set before the throne.
4 The smoke of the incense, mingled with the prayers of the saints, ascended from the angel's hand into God’s presence.
5 Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it down upon the earth. There followed peals of thunder, rumblings, lightning flashes, and an earthquake.
The Trumpets
6 Then the seven angels holding the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound them.
First Trumpet: The Burning of Vegetation
7 The first angel sounded his trumpet, and hail and fire mixed with blood came down and was hurled upon the earth. One-third of the earth was burned up, one-third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.
Second Trumpet: The Sea Struck
8 The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something resembling an enormous mountain blazing with fire was hurled into the sea. One-third of the sea turned into blood,
9 one-third of the living creatures in the sea died, and one-third of the ships were destroyed.
Third Trumpet: The Waters Struck
10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star blazing like a torch fell from the sky. It fell on one-third of the rivers and on the springs of water.
11 The name of the star is Wormwood. One-third of the waters became bitter like wormwood, and many people died from drinking the waters that had become bitter.
Fourth Trumpet: The Striking of the Sun, Moon, and Stars
12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and one-third of the sun was struck, one-third of the moon, and one-third of the stars, so that one-third of them became dark. One-third of the day lost its light, and likewise one-third of the night.
13 As I watched, I heard an eagle flying through midair, crying out in a loud voice, “Horror, horror, horror awaits the inhabitants of the earth because of the remaining trumpet blasts that the three angels are about to sound!”
