Revelation 1

Prologue and Doxology

1 This is the revelation given by Jesus Christ, which God granted to Him so He could show His servants what must happen shortly. Christ communicated this revelation by sending His angel to His servant John,

2 who has borne witness to God’s word and to the testimony about Jesus Christ—everything he witnessed.

3 Blessed is the person who reads these words, and blessed are those who hear this prophetic message and obey what is written here, for the appointed time is drawing near.

Greeting and Doxology

4 John, writing to the seven congregations throughout the province of Asia:

May you experience grace and peace from the One who exists eternally—who is present now, who existed in the past, and who will come in the future; and from the seven Spirits stationed before His throne;

5 and from Jesus Christ, the trustworthy witness, the firstborn from among the dead, and the supreme ruler over all earthly kings.

To Him who demonstrates His love for us and has liberated us from our sins through the shedding of His blood,

6 and has constituted us as a kingdom of priests serving His God and Father—to Him belong all glory and dominion throughout eternity. Amen.

7 Pay attention. He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will observe Him, including those who pierced Him through with a spear, and all the ethnic groups of the earth will beat their chests in mourning because of Him. This is certain. Amen.

8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega—the origin and the goal of all things,” declares the Lord God, “the One who exists eternally—who is present now, who existed in the past, and who will come in the future—the Almighty.”

Vision of the Son of Man

9 I, John, am your brother and companion in the persecution, the kingdom, and the patient endurance that belong to us through our union with Jesus. I found myself on the island named Patmos because I had proclaimed God’s word and maintained my testimony about Jesus.

10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day when I heard behind me a thunderous voice like a trumpet blast

11 announcing, “Write what you observe in a scroll and dispatch it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamum, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.”

12 I turned around to identify the source of the voice addressing me, and when I turned I observed seven lampstands made of gold.

13 Moving among the lampstands was someone resembling a human figure, wearing a full-length robe with a golden sash wrapped around His chest.

14 His head and hair shone with brilliant whiteness like pure wool or fresh snow, and His eyes blazed like flames of fire.

15 His feet gleamed like bronze that has been purified in a smelting furnace, and His voice thundered like the roar of many waters.

16 He held seven stars in His right hand, and a sharp sword with two edges emerged from His mouth, and His face radiated brilliance like the sun shining at its peak intensity.

17 When I saw Him, I collapsed at His feet as though lifeless. But He placed His right hand on me and said, “Stop being afraid. I am the First and the Last,

18 the Living One. I experienced death, but observe—I am alive forevermore, and I possess the keys of death and of Hades.

19 Therefore write down what you have witnessed, both the present realities and the future events that will unfold.

20 Concerning the mystery of the seven stars you observed in My right hand and the seven golden lampstands: the seven stars represent the angels or messengers of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands represent the seven churches themselves.
