James 5

Judgment of Rich Oppressors

1 Come now, you who are wealthy: Grieve aloud and lament because of the calamities that are coming upon you.

2 Your wealth has rotted away, and your fine garments have become food for moths.

3 Your gold and silver have become corroded, and their corrosion will stand as evidence against you and consume your flesh like fire. You have hoarded riches in what are the last days.

4 Look closely: The wages you unjustly withheld from the laborers who reaped your fields are crying out for justice, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of armies.

5 You have lived on the earth in indulgence and luxury, gratifying yourselves without restraint. You have fattened your hearts in preparation for a day of judgment.

6 You have condemned and put to death the righteous one, and he does not resist you.

Patience in Suffering

7 Therefore, be patient, brothers and sisters, until the coming of the Lord. Consider how the farmer waits for the precious yield of the soil, patiently enduring until it receives both the early and the late rains.

8 You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, because the coming of the Lord is near.

9 Brothers and sisters, do not grumble against one another, so that you will not be judged. Look, the Judge is standing right at the door.

10 Brothers and sisters, take as your example of suffering and patience the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

11 Look, we regard as blessed those who endured. You have heard of the perseverance of Job and have seen the outcome the Lord brought about, showing that the Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

Against Swearing

12 Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear oaths, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath. Instead, let your “yes” truly mean yes and your “no” truly mean no, so that you may not fall under judgment.

Prayer and Singing Praises to God

13 Is anyone among you suffering hardship? He should pray. Is anyone experiencing joy? He should sing praises.

14 Is anyone among you sick? He should call for the elders of the church, and they should pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.

15 And the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, they will be forgiven.

16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer offered by a righteous person, when it is working, is remarkably powerful and effective in accomplishing God’s purposes.

17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and no rain fell on the land for three years and six months.

18 Then he prayed again, and the sky gave rain, and the earth produced its harvest.

On Straying from the Truth and Restoration

19 My brothers and sisters, if anyone among you strays from the truth and someone turns him back,

20 let him know that the one who brings a sinner back from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
