Hebrews 3

Jesus, Greater Than Moses

1 Consequently, holy brothers and sisters who participate in a calling originating from heaven, direct your careful consideration toward Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest we openly acknowledge,

2 who proved trustworthy to the One appointing Him, just as Moses also proved trustworthy throughout all of God’s household.

3 For Jesus has been evaluated as deserving greater honor than Moses, in the same measure that a house’s builder deserves greater honor than the house he constructs.

4 For every house receives construction from someone, but God is the One who constructed everything.

5 Now Moses demonstrated trustworthiness throughout all of God's household in a servant’s capacity, providing testimony to things that would later be communicated.

6 But Christ demonstrates trustworthiness in a Son’s capacity over God’s household—and we constitute His household, provided we retain our bold confidence and our hope’s boast.

Warning Against an Evil Heart of Unbelief

7 Therefore, exactly as the Holy Spirit communicates,

“Today, should you perceive His voice,

8 do not make your hearts rigid as during the rebellion,

during that testing day in the wilderness,

9 where your ancestors put Me to the test

and observed My works across forty years.

10 Therefore, I grew angry with that generation,

and I declared, ‘Their hearts perpetually wander,

and they have failed to comprehend My ways.’

11 Just as I swore in My anger,

‘They will absolutely not enter My rest.’ ”*

12 Take care, brothers and sisters, lest there develop in any among you a wicked heart characterized by unbelief, resulting in falling away from the living God.

13 Instead, provide mutual encouragement daily, while it continues to be designated “Today,” so that none among you becomes calloused through sin’s deception.

14 For we have become Christ’s partners, assuming we maintain our initial confidence securely to the end.

15 As the passage declares,

“Today, should you perceive His voice,

do not make your hearts rigid as during the rebellion.”*

16 For who were the ones perceiving yet rebelling? Was it not all those who departed Egypt under Moses’ guidance?

17 And with whom did He experience anger across forty years? Was it not with those committing sin, whose corpses dropped in the wilderness?

18 And to whom did He swear they would not enter His rest, except to those demonstrating disobedience?

19 So we see they could not enter due to unbelief.
