Hebrews 2

Warning Against Neglecting Salvation

1 For this reason, we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not slowly drift away from it.

2 For if the message delivered through angels proved firm and binding, and every violation and act of disobedience received a deserved judgment,

3 how will we escape if we treat with indifference a salvation of such magnitude? This salvation was first proclaimed by the Lord Himself and was later confirmed to us by those who heard Him directly.

4 God Himself also testified alongside them, confirming the message by signs, wonders, various mighty works, and by sovereignly distributing the gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will.

The Son Made Lower than Angels

5 For God has not given authority over the world to come—the world we are discussing—to angelic beings.

6 Instead, Scripture records someone declaring,

“What is man that You hold him in Your mind,

or the son of man that You attend to him?

7 You made him temporarily below the angels in rank;

You placed upon him a crown representing glory and honor.

8 You put all things under his feet.”*

When God put everything under his control, He excluded nothing from this authority. Yet in our current situation, we do not yet see everything under his control.

9 However, we do see Jesus, who was made below angels for a brief period, now wearing the crown of glory and honor because He suffered death. Through God’s gracious provision, He tasted death as the representative for every person.

Bringing Many Sons to Glory

10 For it was completely appropriate that God—the One for whose sake everything exists and through whose agency everything came into being—should lead many sons into glory by bringing the Pioneer of their salvation to completion through sufferings.

11 For the One who makes people holy and those being made holy all originate from one source. This is why He feels no shame in addressing them as brothers and sisters,

12 stating,

“I will make Your name known to My brothers and sisters;

within the gathered assembly I will sing praise to You.”*

13 And in another passage,

“I will rest My confidence in Him.”*

And again,

“Here I stand with the children God has entrusted to Me.”*

14 Since, therefore, the children participate fully in flesh and blood, He similarly partook of that same nature, so that through His death He might destroy the one holding death’s power, namely, the devil,

15 and so that He might liberate all those who through their entire lives remained enslaved because of their fear of death.

16 For clearly He does not reach out to help angels, but reaches out to help Abraham’s descendants.

17 For this reason, it was necessary for Him to become similar to His brothers and sisters in all respects, so that He might prove to be a compassionate and trustworthy High Priest in matters pertaining to God, to accomplish propitiation for the people’s sins.

18 For because He Himself experienced suffering under temptation, He has the capacity to assist those undergoing temptation.
