2 Timothy 4
4
Preach the Word
1 I charge you in the sight of God and of Christ Jesus, who will one day serve as judge over those who are living and those who have died, and I charge you in view of His future appearance and His coming kingdom:
2 Proclaim the message of God’s word with urgency and persistence. Maintain readiness to minister whether the circumstances appear opportune or inopportune. Use the Scriptures to expose and refute error, to issue strong warnings against sin, and to appeal for obedience, always exercising great patience and providing thorough instruction.
3 For the time is approaching when people will refuse to put up with or tolerate wholesome teaching that promotes spiritual health. Rather, motivated by their own selfish desires and cravings, they will accumulate for themselves a multitude of teachers who will say precisely what their itching ears want to hear,
4 and they will deliberately turn their attention away from the truth and will allow themselves to be led off course toward myths and fabricated tales.
5 But as for you, maintain sober judgment and self-control under all circumstances. Be willing to accept and endure hardship. Perform the work that an evangelist does in proclaiming the gospel. Carry through to completion all the responsibilities of your ministry.
Paul Finishes the Race
6 For my own life is already in the process of being poured out like a drink offering on an altar, and the time of my departure from this life has arrived and stands near.
7 I have fought the good fight with courage and determination, I have run the entire race that was set before me and reached the finish line, and I have kept and maintained the faith that was entrusted to me.
8 From this time forward there is reserved and waiting for me the victor’s crown that is awarded on the basis of righteousness, which the Lord, who judges with perfect justice, will present to me on that final day, and He will give it not only to me but to all those who have loved and eagerly anticipated His appearing.
Paul Abandoned
9 Do everything within your power to come to me quickly and without delay.
10 For Demas has abandoned me because he fell in love with this present world system and its attractions, and he has traveled to Thessalonica. Crescens has departed for Galatia, and Titus has gone to Dalmatia.
11 Luke is the only one who remains here with me at present. Take Mark and bring him along with you when you come, for he proves himself useful and helpful to me in carrying out the work of ministry.
12 I have sent Tychicus to the city of Ephesus on a mission.
13 When you make your journey here, bring with you the heavy cloak that I left behind in Troas with Carpus, and also bring the scrolls containing Scripture, but especially bring the parchment documents.
14 Alexander, the worker in metal, inflicted much harm and injury upon me. The Lord will render to him the recompense his actions deserve.
15 You also should be on your guard concerning him, for he vigorously resisted our teaching.
16 When I made my first defense before the Roman authorities, not a single person came to stand beside me in support, but instead everyone abandoned me. May this failure not be charged against them.
Paul’s Confidence in the Lord
17 But the Lord took His position at my side and infused me with strength, so that through my testimony the proclamation of the gospel might be brought to full completion and all the Gentile nations might have the opportunity to hear it. And in this manner I was rescued out of the lion’s mouth and from mortal danger.
18 The Lord will continue to rescue me from every scheme of evil, and He will preserve me safely for entrance into His heavenly kingdom. To Him belongs the glory throughout all the ages to come. Amen.
Final Greetings
19 Extend my greetings to Prisca and Aquila, and to all those who belong to the household of Onesiphorus.
20 Erastus has remained in the city of Corinth, but I was compelled to leave Trophimus behind in Miletus because he had fallen sick with illness.
21 Make every effort to arrive here before the winter season sets in. Eubulus sends his greetings to you, as do Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all the brothers and sisters here.
22 May the Lord be present with your spirit. May grace be with all of you.
