2 Timothy 3

Difficult Times in the Last Days

1 You must grasp this truth clearly: During the concluding era of human history there will be periods characterized by extreme difficulty and dangerous conditions.

2 For people will be entirely absorbed in love for themselves and obsessed with accumulating wealth, they will be characterized by arrogant boasting and haughty pride, they will engage in blasphemous speech and slander, they will show rebellious disobedience toward their parents, they will lack gratitude, and they will have no regard for what is holy.

3 They will be devoid of natural family affection, they will refuse to make peace or reach agreements, they will spread false and slanderous accusations, they will have no ability to exercise self-control, they will be savage and cruel in disposition, and they will hate what is morally good.

4 They will betray confidences and commitments, they will act rashly without thinking, they will be puffed up with conceit and self-importance, they will be devoted to pursuing pleasurable experiences rather than being devoted to God,

5 they will maintain an external form or appearance of godly religion while having rejected and denied the power that could genuinely transform them. You must avoid such people and keep yourself separate from them.

6 For within this category are those who use cunning methods to enter into households and manipulate weak-willed women who are weighed down by accumulated sins and controlled by all kinds of passions and cravings,

7 women who are perpetually learning new teachings yet never capable of coming to full and accurate knowledge of the truth.

8 In the same manner that Jannes and Jambres stood in opposition to Moses, these individuals also stand against the truth. They are people whose minds have become morally corrupted and perverted, and regarding genuine faith they have failed the test and been rejected as counterfeit.

9 However, they will not continue to make headway in their deception, for their senseless foolishness will become completely obvious and apparent to everyone, just as happened with those two magicians who opposed Moses.

The Man of God and the Scripture

10 But you have followed closely and traced carefully my teaching, my manner of life, my resolute purpose, my faith and trust, my patience under trial, my love, my steadfast endurance,

11 along with the persecutions and the sufferings that I experienced in Antioch, in Iconium, and in Lystra. You witnessed firsthand what severe persecutions I endured, yet from every one of them the Lord brought me safely through to deliverance.

12 In fact, all those who are determined to live lives characterized by godliness in union with Christ Jesus will experience persecution and opposition.

13 But evil individuals and fraudulent imposters will proceed from bad conditions to worse, leading others into error while they themselves are being led astray.

14 As for you, however, you must continue to stand firm in the truths you have learned and have become fully convinced of, keeping in mind the trustworthy character of the people from whom you learned these things,

15 and bearing in mind that from your earliest childhood you have had knowledge of the sacred writings, which possess the power to make you wise and lead you to salvation through the faith that is placed in Christ Jesus.

16 All Scripture originates from God’s own breath, and it serves a beneficial purpose for teaching, for exposing and refuting error, for correcting what is wrong, and for providing training and discipline in living a righteous life,

17 so that the man of God may be brought to perfection or complete maturity, fully equipped for the accomplishment of every kind of good work.
