1 Thessalonians 5

The Eschatological Day of the Lord

1 Now regarding the periods and appointed times, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you.

2 For you yourselves understand perfectly well that the day of the Lord arrives in the same manner as a thief comes in the night.

3 Whenever people are declaring, “All is peaceful and safe,” then unexpected destruction comes upon them suddenly, just as birth pains come upon a woman who is pregnant, and they will by no means escape.

4 But you, brothers and sisters, are not living in darkness, so that the day should overtake you as a thief would.

5 For all of you are sons belonging to light and sons belonging to day. We have no association with night or with darkness.

6 Therefore, let us not be sleeping as the rest of humanity does, but let us remain watchful and maintain self-control.

7 For those who are sleeping sleep at night, and those who become intoxicated get drunk at night.

8 But since we are of the day, let us be self-controlled, clothing ourselves with faith and love as protective armor for the chest, and with the confident expectation of salvation as a helmet for the head.

9 Because God has not appointed us to experience His wrath but to gain salvation by means of our Lord Jesus Christ,

10 who died on our behalf so that whether we are awake in life or asleep in death, we should live in union with Him.

11 For this reason, keep encouraging one another and keep building one another up spiritually, exactly as you are indeed doing.

Various Exhortations

12 Now we request of you, brothers and sisters, to recognize and appreciate those who labor diligently among you, who exercise leadership over you in the Lord’s service and who give you admonition,

13 and to regard them with extraordinary love because of the work they perform. Maintain peaceful relationships with one another.

14 We urge you strongly, brothers and sisters: Admonish those who live in an undisciplined manner, speak encouragingly to those who are anxious or discouraged, support those who are weak, exercise patience toward all people.

15 Take care that no one returns evil in payment for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is beneficial both for one another and for all people.

16 Rejoice continuously,

17 pray without ceasing,

18 give thanks in every situation, for this is what God desires from you in Christ Jesus.

19 Do not suppress or extinguish the work of the Spirit.

20 Do not regard prophetic utterances as worthless,

21 but examine all things carefully; retain what is good and valuable.

22 Keep away from every kind of evil.

Pauline Prayer and Request for Prayer

23 Now may the God who gives peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may the whole of your being—spirit, soul, and body—be preserved complete and without blame at the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.

24 The One who calls you is completely trustworthy, and He will certainly bring this to fulfillment.

25 Brothers and sisters, continue to pray on our behalf.

Greeting, Admonition and Benediction

26 Give greetings to all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss of fellowship.

27 I place you under solemn obligation by the Lord to have this letter read aloud to all the brothers and sisters.

28 May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
