Titus 1
1
Greeting
1 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ,* for the faith of God’s elect and the knowledge of the truth that accords with godliness, 2 on the basis of* the hope of eternal life which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of the ages,* 3 but at the proper time* manifested His word in* the preaching with which I was entrusted according to the commandment of God our Saviour;
4 To Titus, genuine child according to a common faith:
Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus* our Saviour.
Qualifications of Elders
5 On account of this, I left you in Crete, so that you might set in order what remained and appoint elders in every city, as I directed you— 6 If anyone is blameless, the husband of one wife, having children who believe and not subject to accusation of dissipation or insubordination. 7 For it is necessary for the overseer to be blameless as God’s steward, not self-pleasing, not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent, not fond of ill-gotten gain, 8 but hospitable, loving what is good, self-controlled, just, pious, disciplined, 9 holding firmly the trustworthy word that accords with the teaching, so that he may be able both to exhort in sound teaching* and to refute those who speak against it.
10 For there are many insubordinate people—empty talkers and deceivers—especially those of the circumcision, 11 who ought to be silenced, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of shameful gain. 12 One of them, a prophet of their own, has stated, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13 This testimony is true. For this* reason, reprove them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith, 14 not paying attention to Jewish myths and the commandments of men* who have turned away from the truth. 15 All things are pure to the pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and conscience have been defiled. 16 They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and unfit for any good deed.
