The Healing of the Gerasene Demon-possessed Man
Matt. 8:28-34; Lk. 8:26-39
1 Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes. 2 And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him from the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, 3 who had his* dwelling among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, 4 because he had frequently been bound with shackles and chains, and the chains had been torn in two by him, and the shackles shattered; and no one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 And constantly, night and day, among the tombs and on the mountains, he was crying out and cutting himself with stones.
6 And when he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees before Him. 7 And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have You to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure You by God, do not torture me!” 8 For He was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” 9 And He was asking him, “What is your name?” And he said to Him, “My name is Legion, because we are many.” 10 And he was begging Him many times not to send them out of the region.
11 Now there was a great herd of pigs feeding near the mountain. 12 And they begged Him, saying, “Send us to the pigs, so that we may enter them.” 13 So He allowed them. Then the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd plunged down the steep bank into the sea, approximately two thousand; and they were drowned in the sea.
14 And those tending them fled and reported it in the city and in the countryside; and they came to see what it was that had taken place. 15 And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man sitting, clothed, and in his right mind—the one who had the legion—and they were afraid. 16 And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man—and concerning the pigs. 17 And they began to beg Him to depart from their region.
18 And as He was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed began to beg Him that he might accompany Him.* 19 But He did not permit him. Rather, He said to him, “Go to your home, to your own people and report to them all that the Lord has done for you, and how He has had mercy on you.” 20 And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him, and they continually marvelled.
Jairus' Daughter and the Woman with the Flow of Blood
Matt. 9:18-26; Lk. 8:40-56
21 And when Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him;* and He was by the sea. 22 Then came one of the synagogue rulers, Jairus by name, and when he saw Him, he fell down at His feet 23 and begged Him many times, saying, “My little daughter is on the verge of death. Come, lay Your hands on her, so that she may be healed and live.” 24 And He went with him.
And a large crowd was following Him and thronging against Him. 25 And a woman was there who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years.* 26 And she had suffered a great deal under many physicians, and had exhausted all her resources,* and in no way had been benefited, but instead had become worse.* 27 Upon hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His garment, 28 for she was saying, “If I touch even His garments, I will be healed.” 29 And immediately, the flow of blood ceased, and she felt in her body that she had been healed of her disease. 30 And immediately Jesus, knowing in Himself that power had gone out from Him, turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched My garments?” 31 And His disciples were saying to Him, “You see the crowd thronging against You, and You say ‘Who touched Me?’  ” 32 And He was looking around to see the one who had done it. 33 Then the woman, fearful and trembling, realising what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. 34 But He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be made well from your disease.”
35 While He was still speaking, they came from the synagogue ruler’s house* saying, “Your daughter has died. Why disturb the Teacher any further?” 36 But Jesus, disregarding what was said,* said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” 37 And He did not permit anyone to accompany Him* except Peter and James and John, the brother of James. 38 Then they came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue and saw a commotion, with people* weeping and wailing loudly. 39 And as He entered, He said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child has not died, but is sleeping.” 40 And they began to ridicule Him. But, after putting them all out, He took along the father of the child and the mother and those with Him, and went in where the child was. 41 And holding the child’s hand, He said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” ), 42 and immediately, the girl arose and began to walk around (for she was twelve years of age*). And immediately, they were completely and greatly amazed.* 43 And He strictly charged them that no one should know of this, and said that something should be given to her to eat.*
