The Parable of the Ten Virgins
1 “Then the kingdom of heaven * will be compared to ten virgins, who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Now five of them were foolish, and five were wise. 3 For when the foolish took their lamps, they did not take olive oil with them. 4 But the wise took olive oil in containers with their lamps. 5 And when the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and began to sleep. 6 But in the midst of the night, there was a shout, ‘See, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ 7 Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your olive oil, because our lamps are going out.’ 9 But the wise ones answered, saying, “No, there will not be enough for us and for you. Rather, go to those who sell olive oil and buy for yourselves.’ 10 But while they were going away to purchase it, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready entered with him to the wedding feast, and the door was closed. 11 And subsequently, the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Sir, sir, open the door for us.’ 12 But in response, he said, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you!’ 13 Therefore, keep awake, because you know neither the day nor the hour. *
The Parable of the Talents
14 For it is like a man embarking on a journey. He called his own servants and entrusted what belonged to him to them. 15 And to one, he gave five talents, and to another two, and to another one, to each one according to his own ability; and he embarked on his journey without delay. 16 The one who had received the five talents went out and engaged in trade with them and acquired an additional five. 17 Similarly, the one who had the two * acquired an additional two. 18 But the one who had received the one went away, dug into the ground and hid his master’s money.
19 Now after a long time, the master of those servants came back and settled accounts with them. 20 And the one who had received the five talents came and brought another five talents, saying, ‘Master, you entrusted to me five talents. See, I have acquired an additional five talents.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things; I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 22 And the one who had the two talents also came and said, ‘Master, you entrusted to me two talents. See, I have acquired an additional two talents.’ 23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things; I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 24 And the one who had received the one talent came also and said, ‘Master, because I knew you, that you are a hard man, reaping where you have not sown and gathering from where you have not scattered seed. 25 And because I was afraid, I departed and concealed your talent in the ground. See, you have what is yours.’ 26 But in response, his master said to him, ‘Wicked and indolent servant. You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather from where I have not scattered seed. 27 Then you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and upon my return, I would have received what was mine with interest. 28 Therefore, take the talent away from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. 29 For to everyone who has, more * will be granted, and he will enjoy an abundance. But from * the one who has nothing, even what he has will be taken away from him. 30 And cast out the useless servant into the outer darkness; in that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
The Separation of the Sheep from the Goats
31 Now when the Son of Man comes in His glory and all the angels with Him, at that time He will sit on His throne of glory. 32 And all the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them from one another, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 And He will place the sheep on His right, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father; inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry, and you provided Me with something to eat; I was thirsty, and you offered Me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you received Me with hospitality; * 36 naked, and you clothed Me; I was ill, and you looked after Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and offer You a drink? 38 And when did we see You a stranger, and receive You with hospitality, or naked, and clothe You? 39 And when did we see You ill, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 And in response, the King will say to them, ‘Truly, I say to you, to the extent that you have done it to one of the least of these My brothers, * you have done it to Me.’
41 Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry, and you did not provide Me with anything to eat; I was thirsty, and you did not offer Me anything to drink; 43 I was a stranger, and you did not receive Me with hospitality; naked, and you did not clothe Me; ill, and in prison, and you did not look after Me.’ 44 Then they will also answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or ill, or in prison, and did not attend to You?’ 45 Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”
