The Conspiracy to Kill Jesus
Mk. 14: 1-2; Lk.22:1-2; Jn. 11:45-53
1 And it occurred that, when Jesus had completed all these sayings, He said to His disciples, 2 “You know that after two days the Passover comes, and the Son of Man will be handed over in order to be crucified.”
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people convened in the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, 4 and conspired so that they might seize Jesus by surreptitious means and put Him to death. 5 But they were saying, “Not at the feast, lest there be an unrest among the people.”
Jesus Anointed in Bethany
Mk. 14: 3-9; Jn. 12:1-8
6 Now, while Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, 7 a woman came to Him holding an alabaster flask of highly valuable perfumed oil, and poured it on His head while He was reclining at the table. 8 And when the disciples saw it, they were greatly displeased, saying, “For what purpose is this waste? 9 For this could have been sold at great price and the money* given to the poor.” 10 But Jesus, knowing this, said to them, “Why are you causing trouble for the woman? For she has performed a noble act for Me. 11 For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have Me. 12 For in pouring this perfumed oil on My body, this woman has acted to prepare * My body for burial. 13 Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, that which she has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.”
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus
Mk. 14: 10-11; Lk. 22:3-6
14 Then one of the twelve, the one called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What are you willing to offer me if I hand Him over to you?” And they agreed on thirty pieces of silver for him. 16 And from that moment on, he began to seek a favourable occasion to betray Him.
The Passover with the Disciples
Mk. 14:12-21; Lk. 22:7-14, 21-23; Jn. 13:21-30
17 Now on the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread,* the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where do You want us to make preparations for You to eat the Passover?” 18 And He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “My appointed time draws near. I am keeping the Passover at your house * with My disciples.” ’ 19 And the disciples did as Jesus ordered them, and they made preparations for the Passover. 20 And when evening came, He was reclining at the table with the twelve.* 21 And as they were eating, He said, “Truly, I say to you that one of you will betray Me.” 22 And exceedingly sad, each one began to say to Him, “Surely it is not I, Lord?” 23 And in response, He said, “The one who dips his hand into the bowl with Me will betray Me. 24 The Son of Man departs just as it is written concerning Him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.” 25 And in response, Judas, the one who was betraying Him, said, “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?” He* said to him, “You have said it.”
The Institution of the Lord’s Supper
Mk. 14:22-26; Lk. 22:15-20; 1 Cor. 11:23-25
26 And while they were eating, Jesus took bread and, after blessing it, He broke it; and giving it to the disciples, He said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” 27 Then when He had taken the cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28 for this is My blood of the * covenant which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 But I say to you, from now on, I will never drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in the kingdom of My Father.” 30 And having sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus Speaks About Peter’s Denial
Mk. 14:27-31: Lk. 22:31-34; Jn. 13:36-38
31 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of Me during this night, for it is written: ‘I will strike the shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I have been raised, I will go before you into Galilee.” 33 But in response, Peter said to Him, “If they all fall away because of You, I will never fall away!” 34 Jesus said to him, “Truly, I say to you that during this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times!” 35 Peter said to Him, “Even if I must die with You, I will never deny You!” And all the disciples said likewise.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
Mk. 10: 2-42; Lk. 22:39-46
36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and He said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go over there to pray.” 37 And taking with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, He began to be sorrowful and distressed. 38 Then He said to them, “My soul is intensely sad, to the point of death. Remain here and watch with Me.” 39 And advancing a little, He fell on His face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” 40 And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and He said to Peter, “So, were you not able to watch with Me for one hour? 41 Watch and pray, so that you will not enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Again, for the second time, He went away and prayed, saying, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, let Your will be done.” 43 And He came again and found them sleeping, for their eyes were weighed down with fatigue. 44 And leaving them once more, He went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same thing again. 45 Then He came to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour has drawn near, and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us go. Behold, the one who is betraying Me has drawn near.”
Jesus Betrayed and Arrested
Mk. 14:43-50; Lk. 22:47-53; Jn. 18:3-12
47 And while He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, approached, and with him a large crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and elders of the people. 48 Now the one who was betraying Him had given them a sign, saying, “Whomsoever I kiss is He. Seize Him.” 49 And immediately, he came to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi,” and he kissed Him. 50 And Jesus said to him, “Friend, for what purpose have you come.” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him. 51 And behold, one of those with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, and having struck the slave of the high priest, he cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Return your sword into its place, for all who take up the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I am not able to call upon My Father, and He will at once place at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54 How then would the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say * it must occur in this way?” 55 At that hour, Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to arrest Me? Every day in the temple * I was * sitting and teaching, and you did not seize Me. 56 But all this has occurred so that the Scriptures of the prophets would be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left Him and escaped.
Jesus Before Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin
Mk. 14:53-65; Lk. 22:54-55, 63-71; Jn. 18:13-14, 19-24
57 Now those who had seized Jesus took Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered. 58 And Peter was following Him from a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest. And upon entering, he sat with the officers to see the outcome.
59 Now the chief priests and the entire Sanhedrin were seeking for false testimony against Jesus in order to put Him to death, 60 but they found none, despite many false witnesses coming forward. And finally two came forward 61 and said, “This man has been saying, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and reconstruct it within three days.’ ” 62 And standing up, the high priest said to Him, “Do You not respond? What is it that these individuals* are testifying against You?” 63 But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to Him, “I place You under oath by the living God, that You tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God.” 64 Jesus said to him, “You have said it. But I say to you, from now on, you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” 65 Then the high priest tore his robes, saying, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have just now heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?” And in response, they said, “He is deserving of death!” 67 Then they spat in His face and struck Him with their fists; and others slapped Him, 68 saying, “Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one that hit You?”
Peter’s Denial of Jesus
Mk. 14:66-72; Lk. 22:56-62; Jn. 18:15-18, 25-27
69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a female servant came to Him and said, “You too were with Jesus of Galilee.” 70 But he denied it before all, saying, “I do not know what you are saying.” 71 And when he went out to the porch,* another female servant saw him and said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 And again, he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man!” 73 And after a little while, those who were standing by came and said to Peter, “Certainly you also are one of them, for even your speech reveals you.” 74 Then he began to curse and to swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately, a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter recalled the statement of Jesus, who said, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And after he went outside, he wept bitterly.
